The Herbert Street frontage of Tony McLaughlin Mechanical Repairs and T&T Motorcycles

Goondiwindi, on the border

The workshop that takescars, bikes and boats.

Tony McLaughlin Mechanical Repairs has been on Herbert Street since 2004. Servicing, repairs and diagnostics on anything with an engine, vehicle inspections for both Queensland and New South Wales, and T&T Motorcycles, Goondiwindi’s own Honda motorcycle and marine dealer, through the same door.

Herbert Street, Goondiwindi

Two boards above one door, and the same bloke behind both.

Walk up to 44 Herbert Street and there are two signs on the wall. One says Tony McLaughlin Mechanical Repairs. The other says T&T Motorcycles. Same phone number on both, because it is one business with two halves, and it has been that way since 2004.

On the mechanical side there are hoists for cars, 4WDs and light trucks, a full Snap-on setup, a parts mezzanine over the workshop floor, and a covered bay out the back for the bigger jobs. On the motorcycle side there is a Honda showroom, a parts counter and the gear to go with it.

It means one place in town can service the ute, do the roadworthy on the caravan, sort the outboard before the trip, and hand the kids a helmet on the way out.

In the workshop

Servicing and repairs on all makes and models

Two hoists inside, another under the covered bay, and room for the sort of vehicles a farming and freight town actually drives.

Servicing and general repairs

Logbook servicing and general mechanical repairs on all makes and models, from the family sedan to the work ute.

Diagnostics

The faults nobody else can find. One customer this year had been to three other mechanics before the problem got sorted here.

Clutches and driveline

Clutch and slave cylinder replacement, gearbox and driveline work, done in-house on the hoists.

4WDs and light trucks

Four wheel drives and light trucks handled alongside cars, with the room and the hoists to take them.

Marine and outboards

Boats get looked after too. Tony has been sorting steering and marine engine trouble for locals for years.

Parts counter

A wide range of spare parts held in stock, with in-store collection when you just need the part.

Set up properly, not making do

A four tonne two post hoist, a second hoist alongside it, Snap-on tooling and diagnostic gear, and a stocked parts mezzanine over the floor. It is a country workshop with city equipment, which is why travellers who break down on the Newell and the Cunningham end up here.

Approved inspections

An inspection station for Queensland and New South Wales.

Goondiwindi sits on the border, and plenty of people here run a vehicle registered on the other side of the river. This workshop is set up to inspect for both states, so you are not driving to another town to get a piece of paper sorted.

  • Queensland safety certificates
  • New South Wales registration inspections
  • Caravans and trailers
  • Cars, 4WDs and light trucks

Tony was amazing! We brought a 2008 Ranger and he fixed our issues where another 3 mechanics couldn't find a solution! We now driving from Goondi to Cairns without problems. Thanks so much, highly recommended

Cannot fault these guys. Our ls1 patrol had a clutch and slave cylinder let go just outside of Goondiwindi. These guys were the only shop in town that made time for us considering we live in Brisbane. Communication was fantastic, turn around time was quick and quality of work faultless. Thank you so much, highly recommend this workshop!

I was recommended to go and see him on Easter Saturday to fix broken steering on my boat. Even though he isn't strictly a boat mechanic, he quickly diagnosed the problem and stayed open on Easter Saturday and got my steering working, saved my holidays. Tony is a guy that typifies what makes country towns great.

About the workshop

A Goondiwindi business since 2004

Tony McLaughlin Mechanical Repairs has been trading in Goondiwindi since 2004, and the reviews tend to say the same thing two ways: the work gets done properly, and people get looked after when they are stuck.

One customer this year had already been to three other mechanics with a Ranger before it got sorted here, then drove it from Goondi to Cairns. Another had a clutch let go just outside town on the way home to Brisbane and found this was the only shop that made time for them. Someone else turned up on Easter Saturday with a boat that would not steer.

That is the shape of a workshop in a border town on two highways. Local servicing and inspections through the week, and whoever comes through the door needing a hand.
